Guide

About this business plan template

Banks, investors and grant programmes want to see that you understand your customers, your costs and how you will make money. This template gets that down to two pages in 10 sections: executive summary, problem and solution, target market, competition, pricing, marketing, operations, a three-year financial plan, funding needed and milestones. Each section has prompts in [brackets] that tell you what to write.

How to write your business plan

  1. 1

Click "Edit online", or download the Word file.

  2. 2

Start with sections 2–4: the problem, your customers and your competitors.

  3. 3

Fill in the pricing table with your real price and cost per product, so the margins are honest.

  4. 4

Estimate three years of revenue and costs; be conservative in year one.

  5. 5

Write the executive summary last, as a 5-line version of everything else, then save as PDF.

Tips for a convincing plan

Use real numbers

Quotes from suppliers, local rents and competitor prices make your plan believable. Guesses are easy to spot.

Know your break-even

Say in which month income will cover costs. Lenders always ask.

Show demand

Pre-orders, a waiting list or a short customer survey is stronger than any market report.

Keep a detailed version

Use this two-page plan to pitch, and keep detailed spreadsheets ready. Our business budget template helps with monthly numbers.
