About this undertaking template
An undertaking is a written promise to do (or not do) something, signed by you and usually by witnesses. Universities ask for one when you join before your result or degree arrives, employers when original documents come later, and hostels and schools for good conduct. Unlike an affidavit, it usually doesn't need an oath commissioner. This template sets out who you are, numbered promises with a deadline, the consequence you accept, and signature blocks for you and two witnesses.
How to write an undertaking
- 1
Download the Word file (or edit online) and write the purpose under the title.
- 2
Address it to the person or office asking for it.
- 3
Fill in your name, parent's name, ID number and roll number or employee ID.
- 4
State exactly what you will do and by which date, and the consequence if you don't.
- 5
Sign it with two witnesses and keep a copy.
Tips for undertakings
Give a real date
"By 30 November 2026" is clearer and safer than "as soon as possible".
Only promise what you control
If the board or university sets the date, say "within 7 days of the result".
Use their format if given
Some institutions have a printed undertaking. Use this one only if they don't.
Keep a signed copy
Ask the office to stamp a copy as received.
