Most people pick a CV template the way they pick a wallpaper: whichever looks nicest. Then they send a two-column design to an online portal that can't read it, or a no-photo UK layout to a Gulf recruiter who expects a photo and visa status on page one.

Short answer: choose your CV template by answering three questions, in this order. 1. Where are you applying? If it's a specific country (UK, Saudi Arabia, Germany…), use that country's format. 2. How will it be read? Online job portals need a plain, single-column ATS-friendly CV; a designed CV is fine when you email a person. 3. What is your situation? No experience, career change, a trade or a profession like nursing each has a layout that puts your strongest proof first. All 26 templates below are free in Word and PDF, with no signup, in the FileConvy templates library.

If two rows fit, the country wins. A nurse applying to Saudi Arabia should start from the nurse CV and add the Saudi details (photo, Iqama, SCFHS), or start from the Saudi CV and add the licence section.

Question 1: Where Are You Applying?

CV rules change more between countries than most people expect. A photo is normal in the Gulf, Germany and France but can count against you in the UK, US, Ireland and Australia. The US wants one page on Letter paper; the UK accepts two pages of A4. Gulf recruiters look for visa status and notice period before they read your experience.

The full rules for each country, with a comparison table, are in CV Format by Country. In short:

  • Gulf (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE): photo, nationality, visa status (Iqama in Saudi Arabia, QID in Qatar), notice period, driving licence and attested degree. Templates: Saudi, Qatar, Dubai & Gulf.
  • UK and Ireland: personal statement, no photo or date of birth, a right-to-work line. Templates: UK, Ireland.
  • North America and Australia: short, results-heavy, no photo. Templates: US, Canada, Australia.
  • Continental Europe: dated tables in Germany, one designed page in France, CEFR language levels everywhere. Templates: Germany, France, Portugal, Europass.

Question 2: Will Software or a Person Read It First?

Most large employers and job sites pass your CV through an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a recruiter sees it. Many of these systems read a page left to right, so a two-column layout can mix your job titles with your skills, and text inside icons, charts or skill bars is often lost.

  • Uploading to a portal or job site? Use a single-column CV such as the ATS-Friendly Resume, and copy the exact skill words from the job ad.
  • Emailing a hiring manager or handing it over at an interview? A designed layout like the Modern CV is fine.

If your designed CV keeps disappearing into portals, that's the likely reason. Why your PDF CV might not be getting callbacks explains how to test it.

Question 3: What Is Your Strongest Proof?

A good CV puts your best evidence where the recruiter looks first. What that evidence is depends on where you are in your career.

No experience yet

Lead with education, practical skills (computer, languages, typing speed), volunteering and informal work like helping in a family shop. One page is enough. Use the CV With No Experience, or the Fresh Graduate CV if you have a degree and projects.

Changing careers

Don't let an old job title be the first thing a recruiter sees. The Career Change CV opens with where you're going, then shows three transferable skills with real examples, then new courses, and only then your work history.

A profession or a trade

Some jobs are screened on one or two facts before anything else, so those facts need their own section:

  • Nurses: licence number and expiry, BLS/ACLS, units and patient load. Nurse CV.
  • Drivers: licence categories and expiry, GCC licence, vehicles, routes and accident record. Driver CV.
  • Electricians and technicians: trade test, safety certificates and the size of projects. Electrician CV.
  • Software developers: a grouped tech stack, results in numbers and links to real code. Software Developer CV.
  • Customer service and call centre: CSAT, handle time and languages. Customer Service CV.
  • Teachers: subjects, levels and exam results. Teacher CV.

A government post

Government departments check eligibility line by line: age, domicile, and the marks and division of each qualification. The Government Job CV puts these in tables, with the post and advertisement number at the top and a signed declaration at the bottom.

Finish It Properly

Whichever template you choose, the last five minutes matter:

  1. Save it as a PDF unless the ad asks for Word. Edit in Word or with "Edit online", then use Word to PDF.
  2. Add a correct photo only where it's expected (Gulf, Germany, France, government jobs). The passport photo maker gives a plain-background head-and-shoulders photo.
  3. Check the file size. Many portals cap uploads at 1–2 MB. Compress PDF if yours is bigger.
  4. Send documents as one file when a form asks for it: merge your CV, degrees and certificates with Merge PDF.
  5. Add a cover letter for jobs you really want. The Cover Letter template matches the CV designs.

Quick FAQ

Which CV template is best for 2026? There isn't one best template. For online applications, a single-column ATS-friendly CV is safest. For a specific country, use that country's format. For a first job or a career change, use a layout that leads with skills and training instead of job history.

Is a one-page or two-page CV better? One page for students, first jobs and up to about 5 years of experience, and for the US. Two pages are normal for experienced professionals in the UK, Europe and the Gulf.

Should I put a photo on my CV? Only where it's expected: the Gulf countries, Germany, France and most government jobs in Pakistan. Leave it off for the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada and Australia.

Are these CV templates really free? Yes. All 26 CV templates can be downloaded in Word and PDF or edited online for free, with no signup and no watermark.

Can I edit the CV without Microsoft Word? Yes. Click "Edit online" on any template page, or open the Word file in Google Docs or LibreOffice.
