About this cover letter template
A cover letter is a one-page letter you send with your CV to explain why you want the job and why you fit it. This template follows the structure recruiters expect: an opening that names the role and your headline result, a paragraph of evidence matched to the job ad, a paragraph on why this company, and a short close asking for an interview.
How to write your cover letter
- 1
Click "Edit online", or download the Word file.
- 2
Add your contact details, the date, and the hiring manager's name and company. Find the name on the job ad or LinkedIn if you can.
- 3
Opening: name the job and where you saw it, then give your experience and one result with a number.
- 4
Middle: pick two requirements from the job ad and show one achievement for each. Then say what draws you to this company.
- 5
Close by asking for an interview, check it fits on one page, and download it as PDF.
Tips for a cover letter that gets read
Write one per job
Recruiters spot a generic letter at once. Change at least the opening, the evidence and the "why this company" paragraph for each application.
Keep it under 400 words
Three to four short paragraphs on one page. Your CV holds the detail.
Use the job ad's words
Repeat the exact skills the ad asks for, so both the applicant tracking system and the recruiter find them.
Don't repeat your CV
Pick the two or three results that matter most for this job and tell the story behind them.
